What actually shortens joint life in Anaheim.
Decades of deck movement leave a mark. On a pool that has been in the ground thirty or forty years, the joint has already absorbed a great deal of expansion and contraction, the walls have been cut and recut, and the channel is often wider and more irregular than it started. None of that is a problem for a properly sized bead on correctly set backer rod, but it is exactly the situation where a rushed job fails fast. We see it across Anaheim in the same order every time. The bead loses its give first, then it splits, then it lets go of one wall. Around Anaheim Hills, Platinum Triangle, West Anaheim and The Colony the pools are close enough in age that a whole street tends to reach that point within a season or two of each other.
