Pool Expansion Joint Repair and Replacement
The expansion joint is the gap between your pool coping and your concrete deck, and the seal in it is the only thing keeping water out of the ground under your slab. When it fails we take it out wall to wall and put a new one in, in one day.

What It Does
The joint is doing a structural job, not a cosmetic one.
Two structures, moving separately
A pool shell and a concrete deck are poured separately and move separately. Heat, cold and settlement all act on them at different rates. The expansion joint is the engineered gap that lets that happen without the two cracking each other.
The seal keeps water out of the sub base
An open joint is a funnel. Every hose down and every rain sends water past the slab edge and into the soil underneath. That soil is what the deck is resting on.
Which is why it is consumable
The joint itself is permanent. The sealant in it is not. Five to seven years is the usual service life in Southern California, shorter on a deck in full afternoon sun.
Repair Or Replace
We do not patch pool expansion joints.
New sealant will not bond to old
The surface of aged sealant is oxidised and dusty. Anything laid over it is sitting on a layer that is already releasing, so the repair fails from underneath and usually within a season.
A patch adds seams where failures start
Every joint between old and new material is a weak point. Patching a three metre run into a thirty metre perimeter creates two new places for water to get in and leaves the rest of the old joint exactly as it was.
Full removal is the only honest quote
Wall to wall, both faces cut back to clean textured concrete, one continuous pass of new sealant, 2 year written warranty. It is why the price is a real number rather than a call back in eight months.
How It Works
Three steps, one day on site.
Measure and lock the price
Send a photo or the linear footage and we return a fixed, per linear foot quote before anything is scheduled. The number you accept is the number you pay.
Strip it back to clean concrete
The old material comes out wall to wall, never a patch over what is already failing. A diamond wheel cuts both faces of the joint back to clean, textured concrete, because sealant bonds to texture and not to dust.
Backer rod, install, tool and cure
New backer rod sets the depth, then premium sanded sealant goes in wall to wall in one continuous pass and is tooled below deck level. Grey or tan. Give it 48 hours before swimming.

Expansion Joint FAQ
Common questions about pool expansion joints.
Your pool shell and your concrete deck are two separate structures that expand, contract and settle at different rates. The expansion joint is the deliberate gap between them that absorbs that movement. Without it the two would push against each other and crack. The flexible sealant in the gap is what keeps water out while still letting the joint move.
We replace it rather than patch it, and that is a deliberate policy rather than an upsell. New sealant does not bond to old oxidised sealant, so patching a bad section puts a new seam right next to a failing one and both let go. The joint comes out wall to wall and goes back in one continuous pass.
Three things, usually together. Ultraviolet exposure hardens the sealant until it splits instead of stretching, the deck keeps moving underneath it, and the original material has simply reached the end of its service life. Full afternoon sun shortens that life noticeably.
Water runs straight into the gap and down to the soil under your deck. Over time that soil washes out, the slab loses support and begins to settle or crack, and coping can loosen. Replacing a joint is a small job. Rebuilding a deck section is not.
Backer rod. It is a foam rope pressed into the joint before the sealant, and it sets the depth so the sealant can stretch properly instead of being glued on three sides. A joint installed without it fails early even when the sealant itself is the right product.
Most residential perimeters are a single day on site. The pool cannot be used that day and the new joint needs at least 48 hours to cure before swimming.
Cracked pool expansion joint? We replace it in a day.
