Pool Caulking Replacement in Southern California
If you are looking to replace the caulking around your pool, you are in the right place. It is the flexible seal between your pool coping and your concrete deck, the trade calls it mastic, and we remove the old one wall to wall and install new in a single day.

Same Job, Two Names
Pool caulking and pool mastic are the same job.
What people search for
Most homeowners call it pool caulking, because that is what it looks like: a bead of flexible sealant running around the pool where the coping meets the deck. Nobody is wrong for calling it that, and it is the phrase we hear on the phone most days.
What the trade calls it
On a plan or an invoice it is the expansion joint, and the material that belongs in it is mastic. The joint is not decorative. It is the deliberate gap that lets the deck and the pool shell move independently without cracking each other.
Why the material still matters
The name is interchangeable. The product is not. A household or silicone caulk is not built for a joint that moves all summer, bakes in the sun and takes pool chemistry. It goes hard, then it splits. We wrote up the difference here.
Warning Signs
How to tell your pool caulking has failed.
It has pulled away from one side
A clean dark line down one face of the joint means the bond has let go. Water is already getting past it every time the deck is hosed or it rains.
It is cracked, crumbling or missing
Sealant that has gone hard splits rather than stretches. Once you can lift a piece out with your fingers, it is doing nothing.
You can see daylight or soil
An open joint is a direct route to the sub base. That is how the soil under a deck washes out, and a washed out deck is a far larger repair than a joint.
Ants, weeds or standing grit in the gap
An open joint collects everything. Weeds and insects in the line are a reliable sign the seal has been gone for a while.
The coping feels loose or the deck has lifted
Movement at the edge usually means water has been under there long enough to do something. Worth a look sooner rather than later.
It was last done more than five years ago
Five to seven years is the usual life in this climate, less in full afternoon sun. If you cannot remember the last time, it is probably due.
How It Works
Three steps, one day on site.
Measure and lock the price
Send a photo or the linear footage and we return a fixed, per linear foot quote before anything is scheduled. The number you accept is the number you pay.
Strip it back to clean concrete
The old material comes out wall to wall, never a patch over what is already failing. A diamond wheel cuts both faces of the joint back to clean, textured concrete, because sealant bonds to texture and not to dust.
Backer rod, install, tool and cure
New backer rod sets the depth, then premium sanded sealant goes in wall to wall in one continuous pass and is tooled below deck level. Grey or tan. Give it 48 hours before swimming.

Pool Caulking FAQ
Common questions about pool caulking.
For the job you are describing, yes. Homeowners say pool caulking, the trade says mastic, and both mean the flexible seal in the expansion joint between your pool coping and your concrete deck. The distinction that does matter is the material: household and silicone caulks are not formulated for a joint that moves, sits in sun and gets pool chemistry on it, which is why a pool deck joint is sealed with mastic rather than ordinary caulk.
It is priced per linear foot of joint, and you get a fixed quote in writing before anything is scheduled. Send a photo or the footage and the number comes back the same day. There is a job minimum, so a small spa and a large perimeter are not priced the same way per foot.
No, and it is the most common reason a joint fails again within a season. New sealant will not bond to old, oxidised material, so a skim over the top lifts within months and you pay twice. We remove the old joint wall to wall and take both faces back to clean concrete first.
Plan on every five to seven years in Southern California, sooner on a deck that takes full afternoon sun. Replace it as soon as you see cracking or the seal pulling away from either face, because that is the point where water starts reaching the soil under your deck.
The pool cannot be used the day of service, and new sealant needs at least 48 hours to cure. The crew is usually on and off site the same day, so it is one day of work and two days of patience.
Grey or tan, both in a premium sanded texture that blends into a concrete deck rather than reading as a stripe across it. The price is the same either way.
