What actually shortens joint life in Irvine.
The soils out here matter as much as the weather. Expansive clay swells when it is wet and shrinks hard when it dries, and a pool deck sitting on it moves with it. That is movement the joint has to absorb on top of everything the sun is already doing to the slab. When the joint stops absorbing it, the slab starts cracking instead, and that repair is an order of magnitude more expensive. If your pool is in Irvine, including Turtle Rock, Woodbridge, Northwood, Quail Hill and Shady Canyon, the question is rarely whether the joint is failing. It is whether it has been open long enough for water to have reached the base under the deck, which is the part that decides how expensive the next few years are.
