What actually shortens joint life in El Cajon.
The soils out here matter as much as the weather. Expansive clay swells when it is wet and shrinks hard when it dries, and a pool deck sitting on it moves with it. That is movement the joint has to absorb on top of everything the sun is already doing to the slab. When the joint stops absorbing it, the slab starts cracking instead, and that repair is an order of magnitude more expensive. We see it across El Cajon in the same order every time. The bead loses its give first, then it splits, then it lets go of one wall. Around Fletcher Hills, Rancho San Diego border, Granite Hills and Bostonia the pools are close enough in age that a whole street tends to reach that point within a season or two of each other.
